BetOnSports Kaplan Heads to Federal Prison

The Post-Dispatch’s Robert Patrick reported this afternoon that Gary Kaplan, founder of BetOnSports, has been sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for racketeering conspiracy, violations of the wire wager act and conspiracy. Readers might recall that Kaplan moved to the St. Charles County Jail in July 2008 after allegations that he was receiving special treatment at the St. Louis County Jail. His time behind bars in St. Charles raised issues, too. Public defenders said his frequent and lengthy visits with attorneys monopolized one of two rooms open for attorney-client visits at the time. Jail administrators made changes, allowing lawyers and to use a jail courtroom for meetings. That seemed to ease tensions, although some attorneys said the jail’s space for attorney-client meetings was inadequate before Kaplan’s arrival. Kaplan will receive credit for time served in jail waiting for resolution to his case, but he will finish his sentence in a federal prison.
