The Utah state intends to join forces with Representative Barney Frank to regulate the online gambling industry to protect people against the dangers of unregulated gambling on the Internet. Today any type of regulation that would help filter out the scams that are taking place on the Internet is prohibited by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Number of US citizens is still gambling online and they are not still protected under the current laws as these sites are unregulated and all kinds of unscrupulous behavior occur. According to the Utah Attorney general Mark Shurtleff’s words, people are gambling online because of two main things: it is enjoyable to them and the government can not recognize this and at least regulate the Internet gambling industry. Frank’s legislation will include several safeguards, such as an age requirement and licensing. However, the main problem for Utah in supporting the legislation is people’s unwillingness of other forms of gambling to be introduced in the state. In case any form of gambling becomes legal in Utah, Indian tribes could be allowed to open casinos. On Sunday there was a meeting of lawyers from the gaming industry and Shurtleff in Washington to find out ways how Utah could support Frank’s Bill without risking their stance on land based casino in the state.
